As underlined in the European Commission's New European Innovation Agenda, Europe is well-placed to lead in deep tech innovation. The European Innovation Council (EIC), part of the Horizon Europe program, was established as a flagship initiative to identify, develop, and scale up emerging deep technologies and breakthrough innovations.
With Horizon Europe, the EIC has structured its funding around portfolios managed by EIC Programme Managers. These high-level domain experts develop strategies for future breakthrough technologies and innovations, and manage the EIC portfolio of funded projects to help achieve these goals.
To date, under Horizon Europe, the EIC has received over 10,000 proposals across its three programmes and funded over 700 projects. This has enabled the EIC to build and develop a strong portfolio of activity in technological and economic sectors critical to Europe's future strategic autonomy and prosperity, such as renewable hydrogen, cell and gene therapies, quantum technologies, and food and agriculture.
The EIC Tech Report is an important resource for analysing the EIC's current activities and future goals. The report provides an overview of new technologies and innovations funded by the EIC. It also includes some technology areas that have attracted high-quality proposals but have not yet been funded by the EIC. These analyses help the EIC decide which technologies to prioritise in the future.
The second part of the report provides analyses of the portfolios of 10 EIC Programme Managers. These analyses show where the EIC is strong in terms of technology areas, and where it needs to develop further.
All of the analyses in the report provide important insights into the EIC's portfolio's future goals and priorities.
